5 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Wedding Photographer

Your photographer will spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost anyone else — and their work is what you'll look at for the rest of your lives. Choosing the right one goes beyond liking their portfolio. Here are the five questions that matter most.

1. Will you be the one shooting our wedding?

Some photography studios book inquiries under the lead photographer's name, then assign a second shooter or associate to your date. Always confirm the specific person whose portfolio you fell in love with will be there.

2. How many weddings have you shot at our venue?

Photographers who've worked your venue know where the light falls at 4pm, which hallway makes a great portrait backdrop, and how to navigate the timeline given the room layout. It's not a dealbreaker if they haven't, but experience at your venue is a genuine advantage.

3. What's your backup plan if something happens to you?

Illness, family emergencies, and equipment failure happen. Ask whether they have a professional backup photographer they can call, and whether that person's work is comparable. A reputable photographer will have a clear answer.

4. What does the editing process look like, and how long until we see our photos?

Industry standard for delivery is 6–10 weeks after the wedding. Ask what's included — full gallery, prints, albums — and whether you can see a full wedding gallery (not just highlight images) to understand the consistency of their work.

5. What's your style when things go off-script?

Weddings rarely run on time. Ceremonies start late, cocktail hour runs long, speeches go on forever. Ask how they handle a compressed timeline. The answer will tell you a lot about how calm and adaptable they'll be on your actual day.

When you find someone whose portfolio you love and who answers these questions confidently, trust that instinct. The relationship and the vibe matter as much as the contract.
